Classes at the Pioneer Village

The Barron County Historical Society and Pioneer Village Museum are pleased to be able to host a variety of classes in traditional and heritage skills taught by members of our local communities. Lip Balm & Salve Making

Friday, June 18th, 2:00 - 4:00 PM


Ruth Westendorf teaches the art of making lip balm and salves, right in your own kitchen! Materials are included in the price of this class.



Mondays, June 21st - July 26th, 1:00 - 3:00 PM

$60 + Materials 

Maxine Holman-Dakins leads students through the art of tatting and creating their first project. This is a multiple-session class. Materials cost runs about $10; students can bring their own size 13 or 14 crochet hook and scissors if desired.


Intro to Leather Working: Puzzle Pouches

Wednesday, July 7th, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM


Mindy Garley teaches the art of making leather puzzle pouches. Students will finish a puzzle pouch to take home by the end of the class. Materials are included in the class fee.


Small Batch Soap Making

Friday, July 23rd, 2:00 - 4:00 PM

Ruth Westendorf returns to the Pioneer Village kitchen to teach students how to make small batch soap in their own home.


Card Making

Wednesday, August 11, 7:00 - 9:00 PM


Julie Andersson teaches the art of making beautiful, decorative cards. Class fee includes most of the supplies needed; students are asked to bring either E6000 Glue or Tape Runner as their choice of adhesive.


Make 'n Take Bouquet Class

Thursday, August 12, 5:30 PM


Carla TePaske teaches students how to make beautiful bouquets and offers tips for successful arrangements. Class fee includes flowers; students are asked to bring a quart mason jar.


Basket Making: Grocery Sack Wastebasket

Monday, August 16, 5:00 - 9:00 PM


Shirley Mount helps students get creative with recycling to create a useful household basket. Class fee includes the full kit to complete one basket.


Quick Breads

Wed., August 18th, 1 - 4 PM OR 6:30 - 9:30 PM


Julie Andersson offers two different sessions (afternoon and evening options) to teach the art of quick breads - English Muffins, Naan, and Biscuits. Class fee includes supplies.


Moccasin Making



Mindy Garley returns with the art of leather working in this class on how to make moccasins! Stay tuned for more info.


Cheese Making



Ruth Westendorf brings more kitchen skills to the Pioneer Village with the art of cheese making. More information to come!


Chicken Butchering



Ruth Westendorf teaches students in-person how to select and butcher chickens in the fall. This class will be hosted off-site. More information TBA.


Cookie Decorating Using Floating Technique



Julie Andersson teaches an invaluable skill for fall and winter baking - making beautiful cookies. More information to come.
